Attractions

The Ferry Boat Inn is far from the madding crowd and the Dengie Hundred offers a huge range of relaxing and not-so-relaxing activities. The area is rich in history with the first evidence of a settlement to the north of nearby Maldon at Elms Farm as far back as the Middle Bronze Age 3500 years ago. In 991AD the Battle of Maldon raged between the Danes and the Earl Bryhtnoth’s men who were defending Maldon on the instruction of the Saxon King Ethelred the Unready. Salt-making goes back more than 2000 years ago when the Romans ruled Britain and continues today. Further history and other information about the surrounding area including tide timetables can be found on North Fambridge, Maldon District Council and local newspaper web sites.

Walking miles past farmland along the sea wall of the River Crouch, one of the most underestimated rivers in England. At high tide, it's half a mile wide and jingling with the sound of wildlife. Herds of red deer can be spotted just a few yards from the pub itself. If you enjoy messing about in boats, there are hundreds of them, not only in Fambridge itself at one of the two Fambridge Marina sites adjacent to the pub and at Westwick (just a 10 minute walk along country lanes), but also at Burnham-on-Crouch, which is easily accessible by train from Fambridge Station.

FOR THE BUSINESSMAN - a tranquil resting place to unwind after a day in the office or on the road.
FOR THE YACHTSMAN - a safe, relaxing harbour after, perhaps an arduous sail from the Continent or along the coast. A full-sized bath and a comfortable bed.
FOR THE GOLFER - a wide choice of courses including Three Rivers, Maldon and Burnham-on-Crouch. Details of green fees and hire charges are available in your room.
FOR MUM & DAD - a day or two's escape from traffic and pollution.
Essex Wildlife Trust FOR THE NATURALIST - Wildlife spotting, not only by the river and on the saltmarshes, but at Blue House Farm, Essex Wildlife Trust's 600 acre nature reserve. The Ferry Boat is a corporate member of the Trust and you can find out more about Blue House Farm from their web-site by clicking on the image on the right.

In fact, the Ferry Boat has something FOR EVERYONE - an opportunity to explore and enjoy one of the remaining unspoilt regions of Essex - The Dengie Hundred, AND a fine range of beers, wines, spirits and good food served in the bar, with its open fire, in the sunny conservatory or in the low-beamed dining room said to date from the 1400s.
